Résumé (nb: la communication se tiendra en français)
In the 1970s I proposed « the anthropology of sound » as a corrective to the limitations of the Merriam and Blacking paradigms for musical anthropology. Over the next twenty years, with field research in Papua New Guinea, this anthropology of sound approach demonstrated new approaches to the anthropology of voice, to ecological and aesthetic co-evolution, to sonic relations across species, and to sonic mediatization and circulation. Since the 1990s I have expanded these concerns through the concept of acoustemology, from acoustics + epistemology, meaning sound as a way of knowing. I have also expanded the terrain of research beyond the tropical rainforest to both rural and urban settings in Europe, Japan, and Ghana, as well as to recording studios and global music circulations, including cyberspace. In this talk I will reflect on some key propositions from this work.
